Black Canyon of the Gunnison Rim Drive
View Slide Show

Black Canyon Rim Drive - While there are opportunities for hikes, this area is accessible for those with limited mobility. There are 12 viewpoints to enjoy along the 7-mile South Rim Drive. Most have a short walk to the edge. There are three accessible overlooks: Pulpit Rock, Chasm View, and Sunset View. The views from all overlooks are amazing. Stop first at the Visitor Center and take the short walk down to the overview of the canyon. The cliffs are beautiful here and you can see the river – it’s a great introduction to the canyon. I recommend stopping at all the viewpoints as the views are different at each. The painted wall shown in slide 15 is probably the most famous. There are a lot of signs along the way that give you information on how the canyon was formed.

There is a great hike at the end of the drive. Park at High Point and take the Warner Point Trail. It is only 3 miles round trip and is not difficult. What I found most amazing about this trail is that as it gets near the top, the trail is on a ridge. If you look to your left, you see flat green fields with mountains in the distance (slides 22 and 23). If you look to your right, you see the steep cliffs of the Canyon (slides 24 and 25). It is hard to believe these could be located so close together..
