Horseshoe Bend: This section of the Colorado River is part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. It is located 5 miles south of Glen Canyon Dam on Hwy. 89. There is a large parking lot but it can be full. The hike is 1.5 miles round trip and is relatively easy with only 150' elevation change but it seems like more, especially if it is hot. There is no shade. The main negative about this hike is that it may be the most crowded hike I have ever been on. However, the crowds stay mainly in the area where the path ends in the middle of the horseshoe. If you walk to the right or left, you will escape most of the crowd. Many of my photos are taken by going to the right. While the curve of the river 1,000 feet below is the big draw for most people, the rock formations along the rim are varied and quite interesting. I recommend exploring the area and not just looking at the main attraction. |
