Maha'ulepu Beach Hike
View Slideshow

Maha'ulepu Beach to Kawelikoa Point - This is a very easy and wonderful hike. It is approximately 5 miles round trip although I only went about halfway. Recommend that you at least go as far as the bay my photographs show toward end of the slide show.

To get to the trail, take Poipu Beach Rd east. Go past the Hyatt Hotel. Road changes to Weliweli Rd and becomes dirt. Take this road until you come to a 4-way junction, turn right and drive .4 miles to a T-junction. Parking is on the right and a short trail takes you to the beach.

If Weliweli is closed, you can take road to CJM Country Stables and then go left on road marked "Cave". You can park alongside the road and follow signs to cave (which looked like a sinkhole to me). Continue on trail passed the cave and you get to beach. Turn left and continue along beach. The main trail hits beach just past Gillin's house (the only one around). Continue along beach or if it is hot, find trail that continues through the trees for awhile.

After a stretch of sand, you will reach Kaweiloa Bay. Part of the bay is lined with very sharp lava or sandstone rock but there is a section that can be swimable if surf is not too high. Continue on trail that goes around Kaweiloa Bay. There are many wave sculpted sandstone formations, a wet and a dry blowhole (small in comparison to Spouting Horn but still noisy), incredible views of the ocean and the cliffs in the distance. Occasionally you might see an endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal sleeping on the sand. Enjoy the view but avoid getting close to it.

This hike goes all the way to Kawelikoa point but the bay past Kaweiloa is a nice turnaround spot.
