Petrified Dunes Trail: This trail, as with most in the park, is off Snow Canyon Drive. It leaves from a couple of trailheads. Get map when you enter park. The park says it is 1.2 miles long but most of the time, you don’t see a trail and you just wander along the massive Navajo Sandstone formed from ancient desert sand dunes. This is great for kids because they can clamber around and go up to the top of some of the dunes. You can see the Whiterocks area to the north and in interesting area to east that has basalt lava at the top of the cliff and a lot of lava cascading over the red rock (see slide 7). I was fascinated to find a flat, round, sandy area (slide 8) in the middle of all the rock. It was totally different from anything else I saw. I wish I could tell you how it was formed. |
