Rush Creek Trail - This trail is located on the June Lake loop road at the northern end of Silver Lake. The hike to Agnew Lake, elevation 8,500, is 4.2 miles round trip with an elevation gain of about 1,300 feet. The first part is fairly level but then it is a pretty good climb up to the lake. The views are great: the lakes below, the waterfall that you keep seeing from different vantage points as you climb, and a great variety of rocks and wildflowers. The first photo shown is of the Rush Creek waterfall from the June Lake loop road. The second photo shows the different lakes you can hike to on this trail. I just went to Agnew Lake. Agnew Lake is a bit of a surprise as there is a dam and a hydroelectric station there. While all workers and materials for this station are now delivered by helicopter, initially they all arrived by the Lake Agnew Tramway. You can see the track in photo 12. Initially when I saw it from a distance, I thought it was stairs. Fortunately, the trail crosses the tracks several times on switchbacks so while steep, it is not that bad. I did this hike in late June. It is best done in the morning since there is little shade available. It is likely to be covered in snow in the winter. |
